AYA Neo 2 and Geek 1 Mini PC Kit announced along with upgrade pathway to Neo 2S and Geek 1S performance
With the launch of the new AYA Neo 2S and the Geek 1S, original owners of the preceding AYA Neo 2 and Geek could feel a little envious of the new more powerful machines. Thankfully, the company behind the PC handhelds has an unexpected upgrade solution in the works, with a "paid upgrade service" for their existing consoles which will fit them with a new motherboard. In another unexpected bonus, AYA is also offering a Mini PC kit that will allow users to convert their old motherboard into a compact desktop computer.
This is a similar, and welcome approach, that Framework has adopted with its upgradeable laptops. For those unfamiliar with the process, Framework buyers can upgrade their laptop motherboard with new and faster CPUs and RAM when they are launched, with the old motherboard able to be recycled into a new SFF desktop computer.
In the instance of Framework, the process can be handled entirely by the end users with minimal fuss. However, it is not clear exactly what AYA has in mind as to whether devices will need to be shipped back to them or if they will allow users to self-install the upgrade to the new Ryzen 7 7840U motherboard. The company is already offering Heat Dissipation Upgrade Kits that can be self-installed, so it seems the latter option is the most likely.
With the original AYA Neo 2 and Geek models being powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U mated to an integrated RDNA 2-based Radeon 680M GPU, the AYA Neo Mini PC conversion kit will still prove to be a handy little performer. Pricing or availability of the upgrades and Mini PC Kit have yet to be made available.
