Chico State students get new tablets
CHICO — Chico State teamed up with Excess Telecom, a government-sponsored telecom company, to offer Android tablets with free or low-cost data plans to students and community members who have a need for the service.
On Wednesday and Thursday, representatives from Excess Telecom set students up with the tablets computers at the Bell Memorial Union at Chico State. The Androids costs $159, but those who are income eligible and received government assistance from Cal Fresh and Medicaid or who have Pell Grants are eligible to receive the computers for $11.
The tablet comes with a free data plan of 15 gigabytes per month. Anyone who desires higher data allowances can do so for a monthly fee.
Those interested in getting a tablet can still apply online and receive a tablet in the mail with free shipping.
IT Director of Technology Equity and Inclusion Jeremy Olguin has begun efforts to bring access to technology into the equation of closing equity gaps for Chico State students.
"I hope to build TEIN similar to what Basic Needs modeled on this campus. They started off as a smaller operation and now are a major contributor to the success of our students," Olguin said.
